Course description:

  • Lectures and practical research on physical phenomenon (vibration, acoustic bodies), basic of acoustics
  • Acoustics as dramaturgical element
  • Playable scenography – “instrument” workshop
  • Sets and acoustics – lectures and practical experimentation
  • Possible guests include: Kalev Tiits (music technology, Sibelius Academy), Ilkka Niemeläinen (Aalto-university, Otaniemi), Rauno Nieminen (instrument building)

What kind of skills/training students can expect to achieve (learning outcome):
The student will be able to design and build simple instruments as a part of scenography. The student understands the basic concepts of acoustics and some practical ways of controlling it and possible unwanted sounds produced by built elements on the stage. The student understands the dramaturgical nature of acoustics.

Requirements:
Mainly for but not limited to the students of scenography and sound

Teachers:
Sampo Pyhälä, lecturer of scenography (Aalto-university), experience on opera productions and building playable sets for theatre productions. Jari Kauppinen, professor of sound design (Theatre Academy, Uniarts, Helsinki)
